Important information for users with VirtualBox installed

Important information for users with VirtualBox installed

If you have VirtualBox installed on your computer and participate in this project please note:

  • in order to get tasks your CPU needs to have virtualisation capabilities (AMD-v or VT-x)
  • those virtualisation capabilities need to be enabled in your BIOS settings or all tasks will error out
  • Some tasks are incompatible with newer VirtualBox versions:
    If you have 1.15 or earlier tasks, you must use VirtualBox 4.3.x or earlier.
    If you have 1.17 tasks, you must use VirtualBox 5.0.x or earlier.
    If you have 1.18 tasks, you may use VirtualBox 5.1.x.
    If you have 1.19 tasks, you may use VirtualBox 5.2.x.
  • a BOINC client of at least 7.2.33 is recommended
  • The runtime of the cmsearch VM apps are very long (>1000 hours) and deadlines are automatically extended but only visible on the website!
If you don't want to get work for the VM application please disable "cmsearch VM" in your project preferences.

Rechenkraft.net at the MakerFaire Hannover 2025: Images & more...
Just returned from last weekend's MakerFaire in Hannover, where our team presented the latest developments of the Rechenkraft.net HoloDeck project at booth #156 in the Eilenriedehalle: An OpenSource molecular AugmentedReality environment based on the TiltFive board gaming hardware to visualize biomolecules (or any other #3D object available in .glTF file format) for educational or research purposes.

Importantly, this system allows us to visualize work unit files of several chemistry, life science and biomedical distributed computing projects as for example Rosetta@home, SiDock@home, and many more.
Our project was one of only seven projects featured on the MakerFaire's special announcement webpage and, as a consequence, a lot of people came visiting out booth.

We posted a few brief reports and several images from the HoloDeck booth on LinkedIn, Bluesky and Mastodon for you to get an impression on what was going on.

Thanks to the entire team for helping to put this into practice and also to the many RNA World and Rechenkraft.net supporters and to the Einstein@home team who celebrated their 20th anniversary at the MakerFaire booth #157 right next to ours.
It should also be noted that the Justus Liebig University in Giessen currently funds the development of a course which utilizes HoloDeck for teaching and research purposes.

Rechenkraft.net at the Hannover Maker Faire 2025
Rechenkraft.net will be part of the 2025 Maker Faire in Hanover, Germany. This is the largest festival for maker culture in Germany celebrating creativity and technology on 23–24 August.

You can find us at booth no. 156 in the “Eilenriedehalle” of the Hannover Congress Centrum (Theodor-Heuss-Platz 1-3, 30175 Hannover).
Come and visit us to find out more about our HoloDeck and chat with our scientists and developers. We look forward to meeting you there!
