Weber Post: Just returned from last weekend's MakerFaire in Hannover, where our team presented the latest developments of the Rechenkraft.net HoloDeck project at booth #156 in the Eilenriedehalle: An OpenSource molecular AugmentedReality environment based on the TiltFive board gaming hardware to visualize biomolecules (or any other #3D object available in .glTF file format) for educational or research purposes. Importantly, this system allows us to visualize work unit files of several chemistry, life science and biomedical distributed computing projects as for example Rosetta@home, SiDock@home, and many more. Our project was one of only seven projects featured on the MakerFaire's special announcement webpage and, as a consequence, a lot of people came visiting out booth. We posted a few brief reports and several images from the HoloDeck booth on LinkedIn, Bluesky and Mastodon for you to get an impression on what was going on. Thanks to the entire team for helping to put this into practice and also to the many RNA World and Rechenkraft.net supporters and to the Einstein@home team who celebrated their 20th anniversary at the MakerFaire booth #157 right next to ours. It should also be noted that the Justus Liebig University in Giessen currently funds the development of a course which utilizes HoloDeck for teaching and research purposes. Michael.

Weber Post: Today, a brief popular science article dealing with the Rechenkraft.net community and the RNA World Projekt has appeared in the online version of the popular German lab journal 'Laborjournal' - unfortunately, this article is available only in German. Rechenkraft.net has spread the news already via Twitter. Heute ist im Laborjournal (Online-Variante) ein kleiner deutschsprachiger Artikel zur Rechenkraft.net Community und unserem RNA World Projekt herausgekommen. Rechenkraft.net hat ihn auch schon über Twitter verbreitet. Michael.
10) Message boards : News : Unplanned server shut down (Message 407) Posted 29 Aug 2019 by Michael H.W. Weber Post: Dear participants, for unknown reasons, the RNA World server shut down yesterday. Due to the unusually high temperatures my best guess at present is that the machine has undergone a safety shut down to prevent hardware damage. We will investigate this in more detail. For now, after manual inspection I have managed to successfuly reboot the machine and everything seems to work fine again. Some measures have been taken to try to reduce the temperature in the server room. Thanks a lot to those who have reported this issue to us - fortunately, and in contrast to all other BOINC projects, our discussion forum is independently hosted from the project server such that we remain reachable even in case of a total system failure. ;-) Liebe Unterstützer, aus ungeklärten Gründen ist der RNA World Server gestern ausgeschaltet worden. Aufgrund der derzeit hohen Sommertemperaturen tippe ich darauf, dass sich die Maschine zur Vermeidung von Hardwareschäden runtergefahren hat. Wir haben die Logs noch nicht ausgewertet, werden der Ursache aber noch im Detail nachgehen. Nach Inspizierung vor Ort habe ich den Server inzwischen erfolgreich manuell wieder hochgefahren und derzeit scheint alles normal zu funktionieren. Es wurden ein paar Maßnahmen ergriffen, um die Temperaturen im Serverraum etwas niedriger zu halten. Bedanken möchten wir uns recht herzlich bei denjenigen, die uns über das Problem informierten - glücklicherweise ist unser Diskussionsforum anders als bei allen anderen BOINC-Projekten von der Serverinfrastruktur unabhängig, sodass wir auch nach einem Totalausfall erreichbar bleiben. ;-) Michael.

Weber Post: The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) system is the software infrastructure used by RNA World and many other volunteer distributed computing projects. The BOINC Open Source Project is looking for volunteers to develop and maintain the BOINC client on macOS. The BOINC Client and Manager are C++ cross-platform code supporting Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, and several other operating systems. Currently there are a number of volunteer developers supporting Windows and Linux, but the main macOS developer is winding down his involvement after many years. He is prepared to help a few new macOS developers get up to speed. Everything should be back to normal now. The cause is actually unknown, probably some issues with the electricity circuits. Gestern war der RNA World Server aus unbekannten Gründen ein paar Stunden nicht erreichbar. Wir vermuten ein Problem mit der Spannungsversorgung, da ein HPC und etliche andere Maschinen ebenfalls ausgefallen sind. Seit gestern ca. 17:30 Uhr Lokalzeit sollte aber wieder alles regulär laufen. Juni findet in Wieda im Harz das 8. teamübergreifende BOINC-Treffen statt. Es werden Mitglieder verschiedener Teams und Projekte dabei sein und wir werden gemeinsame Ausflüge unternehmen, grillen und einfach mal Leute in der Realität treffen, die man sonst nur Online kennt. Es sind noch einige Plätze frei. Näheres zur Teilnahme und das Antragsformular finden sich bei uns im Forum. Vom RNA World Team werden Yoyo und Michael vor Ort sein. MIchael. 16) Message boards : News : Manual inspection of the monster WUs: Credits coming up (Message 398) Posted 27 Apr 2017 by Michael H.W. Weber Post: I am very happy to anounce that, thanks one of our particularly enthusiastic volunteer crunchers (Jacob Klein), we were finally able to make major progress regarding the yet non-validated very long work units (termed Monster WUs). Some of you may remember that the transition from regular to virtual machine-based computation of these tasks resulted in the problem that we had to carry out the validation process manually. This issue now appears to be resolved and Christian is going to make a few magic tweaks on the server side such that the corresponding credits will be granted - presumably some time this upcoming weekend. Again, my thanks to Jacob for helping us to finally get this going. Ich freue mich darüber, euch mitteilen zu können, dass wir Dank eines unserer besonders engagierten Unterstützer (Jacob Klein) große Fortschritte bei der Validierung der besonders aufwändigen Monster WUs machen konnten. Einige von euch werden sich sicher noch daran erinnern, dass wir beim Übergang zur Berechnung der sehr langen Aufgaben unter Virtualbox das Problem hatten, dass klassich berechnete WUs manuell gegen VM-basierte WUs zu validieren waren. Dieses Problem scheinen wir nun in den Griff bekommen zu haben und Christian wird - voraussichtlich noch kommendes Wochenende - einige magische Griffe auf unserem Server anwenden, damt die entsprechend ausstehenden Credits endlich vergeben werden können. Ich möchte mich an dieser Stelle noch einmal bei Jacob für seine wertvolle Hilfe bedanken. :) Michael.

Weber Post: Our server indicates issues with one of the hard disks in our raid system, so we had ordered two replacement drives which will presumably be tested and used to cure the problem, today. It is therefore possible that the RNA World server might be offline for a short while. Anyway, different from other DC projects our discussion forums always remain available for communication with the project team independently of the core server status. Unser Server scheint ein paar Probleme mit einer der Platten des RAID-Verbunds zu haben, also haben wir umgehend zwei neue bestellt, die wir voraussichtlich heute noch einbauen, testen und zur Lösung des Problems nutzen werden. Es ist daher möglich, dass der Server zwischenzeitlich mal nicht erreichbar ist. Für den Fall der Fälle ist unser Diskussionforum - anders als bei anderen DC-Projekten - auch unabhängig vom Projektserverstatus kontinuierlich für Kommunikationszwecke mit uns verfügbar. Michael.
