Does this update handle the previous VM problem that kept BOINC from ever checking for VM support again on computers where such a check had previously failed?

No it does not. The problem you describe is in the BOINC Client. One has to manually remove a certain XML tag from client_state.xml I think but I'm not sure. This needs to be fixed in the Client or Manager and there is a proposal but nobody implemented it yet.

Hi BobCat13,

thanks for reporting this. I totally missed this last night but fixed it now. Everything should be up and running now.

I'm going to migrate RNA World to a new Server on Sunday (09. Nov). The transition will take around 5 hours and the project will be in maintenance mode the whole time. You don't have to change anything on your computers.

"regular-sized" means non-VM. There is a good turnaround with this batch. Meaning that it is depleted already and we now have to wait for the in progress tasks to come back.

7) Message boards : News : please upgrade your BOINC installations to use VM application (Message 345)

Please upgrade your BOINC installations to 7.2.33 (recommended stable release at the moment) if you want to get work for the VirtualBox enabled application. Because of a bug in versions before 7.2.24 the BOINC Client would start several Virtual Machines without checking if enough RAM is available. The RNA World Server will only issue VM-tasks to version 7.2.24 or newer. For further assistance visit our website or the forum.

So, I believe this means that I currently have no means of knowing the real progress at all. :( For all I know, the VMs might be stuck in some sort of infinite loop (are they? What's a realistic completion time for these?)

I hope you are able to significantly improve the indication of progress level, in the next version.

That's right, nobody can know the real progress because the cmsearch algorithm is non-deterministic. I tried to design the control script that an infinite loop is not possible. What I may do in a future version is to let the progress "flicker" a little bit. Switching between 98,0 and 99,0% could indicate that the VM is still alive.

So, my questions are:
- How accurate are the "Remaining (estimated)" values for each VM?
- Can anything be done to show actual Progress % in BOINC, with smooth updates to the % value?

Thanks again for your work, I'm happy to be crunching for your project again! --Jacob Klein

The "Remaining (estimated)" values are calculated using the FLOPS estimation done on the server and are not very accurate.

The actual Progress % are calculated on each host using the same function as on the server. They should be smooth and get capped at 98,765% if they were too low. It seems that for the current long running tasks this is reached very quickly which indicates a bug in the calculation logic. This does not affect the actual scientific calculation it's just a cosmetic issue. I will look into this issue for the next version of the application (for which there is no ETA).

We just released new application versions for Windows, Mac and Linux of the cmsearch VM app that uses VirtualBox for checkpointing. Here is how you can participate:

  1. if applicable, enable the AMD-v or VT-x capability of your CPU in your BIOS
  2. install VirtualBox on your computer (4.2.16 is required, 4.2.18 or better are not working at the moment)
  3. install BOINC 7.x (sometimes you have to reinstall after the VirtualBox installation)
  4. select the cmsearch VM application on your RNA World preferences page
  5. allow BOINC to use at least 2GB of hard disk space and 4GB of RAM on your global preferences page
